Queer-Inclusive Social Work: Conceptualisation and Competence Development for Practitioners Across Different Fields of Social Work

Heteronormativity and binary gender thinking continue to prevail in social work. As a result, the particularly vulnerable and highly diverse group of queer individuals is often not recognised in relation to their specific needs. The project Queer-Inclusive Social Work therefore aims to foreground LGBTIAQ+ issues as a cross-cutting theme across various areas of social work practice. Students explore different social work services to identify existing approaches to queer-related topics and, based on identified needs, work together with social workers, organisations, and clients to develop approaches for queer-inclusive practice within each field.

Using qualitative research methods (expert interviews, biographical work, and social space analysis for participatory needs assessment), the project investigates needs, requirements, and barriers. Based on these analyses, students develop recommendations, concepts, guidelines, workshops, or similar outputs to strengthen and embed the competencies of social work practitioners in the field of queer-inclusive practice.
