Shaming and Shame – Experiences and Counterstrategies of People Experiencing Poverty and Exclusion

Das Projekt "Beschämung und Scham - Erfahrungen und Gegenstrategien von Menschen mit Armuts- und Ausgrenzungserfahrungen" bei der projektevernissage an der FH St. Pölten

People who are affected by poverty or are otherwise disadvantaged often make experiences that they perceive as shameful. Among other places, this happens in authorities, in the health sector, and in contact with (social) institutions. In the public discourse, disparaging images of disadvantaged groups are also increasingly disseminated.

This project intends to document these experiences in interviews, research counterstrategies and discuss and develop them together with those affected. In addition, research into effective projects abroad is conducted and a special focus is on analyzing the role of Social Work.

The affected persons can individually learn from measures such as peer support to handle experiences of shame more confidently or to reject them. At the same time, these experiences can be reduced at the institutional level by taking up the topic in depth and offering users possibilities for participation. On a societal level, anti-stigmatisation campaigns can attempt to influence the attitudes of people in the wider public.

Based on concrete experiences, this bachelor project provides an overview of various projects and approaches including their effectiveness and seeks to document and, if possible, publish them.
