Assuming heteronormativity and thinking in binary gender roles continues to be the norm –which is also true for Social Work. As a result, the particularly vulnerable and highly diverse group of queer individuals is often overlooked, and their specific needs remain unmet. The project Queer-Inclusive Social Work focuses on LGBTQIA+ issues as a cross-cutting concern in various areas of Social Work practice.
Students study existing approaches to queer topics within different Social Work services, exploring both current understandings, and (gaps in) developments. In collaboration with social workers, institutions, and clients, they develop strategies for implementing queer-inclusive practices in each respective field.
Using qualitative research methods, the project explores recent developments related to queer issues in Social Work, including needs, challenges, and barriers. Best practice examples are identified to serve as models for inclusive Social Work approaches. Based on these analyses, the project offers strategies for overcoming obstacles and provides recommendations for political accountability of Social Work.
