Combing History, Citizen Science and Modern Media Technology

Georg Vogt works as a Senior Researcher in the Media Creation Research Group at the Institute of Creative\Media/Technologies at USTP – University of Applied Sciences St. Pölten.

In his research, Vogt combines participatory approaches to historical topics with modern media technology. At the interface of community engagement, collection and archive work, and storytelling through film, he offers access to historical sources and makes history approachable.

Biographies and Regional History – a Multi-Layered Challenge

In a current research project, Vogt examines the industrial, cultural heritage of rural environments: The citizen science project “Village Industries” studies the industrial history of the countryside by involving the local population. The project focuses on numerous smaller industrial sites in communities, and the rich collections in local museums and archives.

In the research project TOVIES, Vogt and his team collaborate with schools and museums to develop interactive, gender-sensitive and collaborative digital tools to engage people with museum exhibits.

This project follows a series of other projects. Vogt was also involved in coming to terms with the history of the forced labour camp under the Nazis in Roggendorf/Pulkau in a broad participatory process.

In the project ReGioBiograph, he worked on the visualisation of media collections and the representation of Jewish history (book on the project)

Vogt and his team will soon start yet another project with the objective of developing an extension for exhibition design to complement the successful citizen science archive platform. Topotheques such as this platform are valuable digital archives for regional history. However, they have been mainly used as databases. The possibility to present this content directly from these collections has not been realised so far. Vogt aims to close this gap through his research and development work.

Author, Curator, Festival Director and Filmmaker

Vogt studied Theatre, Film and Media Studies at the University of Vienna. He is the co-director of the SUBURBINALE film festival, and co-founder of the topoteque in Groß-Enzersdorf. He also works as an author, publisher, photographer, videographer and curator in the culture industry. His current artistic projects include the Ferry Radax film portrait “Franzens Weltpanorama” and his participation in Viertelfestival 2026 with the project “Bade-Geschichten vom Donau-Oder-Kanal”.
