Strengthening the role of students within European University Alliances.
Background
The European Universities initiative has set the stage for strategic partnerships and bottom-up networks among higher education institutions across the EU. In line with the Competitiveness Compass, the alliances aim to strengthen the very foundation of Europe’s competitiveness—its people. As such, the alliances also have a social dimension: they strive to enhance social cohesion and innovation under the Union of Skills and Union of Equality, to empower young people, and to ensure that student rights, access, and conditions across the different universities are aligned. Achieving this requires administrative and legislative reforms across higher education systems throughout Europe.
Project Content
In response to the European Commission’s call for a robust Inclusivity Framework for the European Universities Initiative, the project seeks to give greater prominence to the social dimension within the Alliances. This includes developing a proposal for an Inclusivity Framework, providing a practical toolkit, and supporting the student representative bodies within the Alliances. The project therefore serves as a trial run for a larger European initiative aimed at assessing the need to establish student councils within each European University Alliance.
Aims
The aims of the project are:
- To develop criteria, indicators, and methods to assess how the social dimension plays out within European University Alliances.
- To create a proposal for an Inclusivity Framework as outlined in the European Strategy for Universities.
- To identify obstacles that hinder the implementation of an Inclusivity Framework and to develop strategies for successful implementation.
- To foster collaboration between the student representative bodies in the Alliances and the European Students’ Union.
- To strengthen student’s competencies through capacity-building and the exchange of best practices.
Impact
This project places great emphasis on the social dimension within European University Alliances. In particular, it strengthens student participation and the role of student representative bodies. By engaging students in policy-related tasks and decision-making processes, we foster a sense of ownership and agency. Through this approach, students not only help create inclusive and interconnected higher education environments but also benefit personally and professionally. They develop greater intercultural understanding and hone their communication and critical-thinking skills. At the same time, their involvement promotes civic engagement, contributing to a more socially responsible academic community.
